CSE team from UoM won the Best Students Research Project Award and a Merit Award at NBQSA 2025

Mr. Dakshina Ranmal, Ms. Piumini Ranashinghe, and Mr. Thivindu Paranayapa, from the Batch 19, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, University of Moratuwa, were awarded two awards: the Best Students Research Project of the Year award and the Merit award in the Tertiary Student category, at the NBQSA 2025, for their final year project titled “Deep Learning Optimization for Forest Sound Classification”.

NBQSA, provides recognition to outstanding achievements of individuals and organizations in Sri Lanka who have developed high quality ICT products; provides a window to gain International Recognition of Local ICT products; improves the quality of products & Services to meet International Standards and Identifies young talent and provide them an opportunity to develop their skills in ICT. The competition has been conducted by the Sri Lankan section of the BCS The Chartered Institute for IT. The projects were evaluated with presentations for novelty and creativity. The award ceremony was held on 10th October 2025, in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

“Deep Learning Optimization for Forest Sound Classification” is a pioneering research project set to revolutionize forest conservation through cutting-edge technology. This study focuses on deep learning model optimization, ensuring that the system operates efficiently even with limited computational resources, balancing accuracy, energy consumption, and processing power to develop a sustainable and reliable edge-based solution for remote forest sound recognition. The findings are also published in high-ranked journals and reputed conferences.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering congratulate the team on this great achievement and extend wishes for a bright future.
