30 August 2025CSE Researchers Release SinLlama: The First Large Language Model for SinhalaA research team from the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, University of Moratuwa, has achieved a significant milestone in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) for Sri Lanka by developing SinLlama, the first open-source Large Language Model (LLM) built specifically to support Sinhala. Sinhala, spoken by over 20 million people, has historically been underrepresented in AI systems. While past efforts introduced word embeddings and smaller models for Sinhala, no modern LLMs had been explicitly trained for the language. This gap has limited the availability of advanced digital tools for Sinhala speakers, contributing to a growing digital divide. SinLlama aims to change that.
