Velosphere wins first place in the ComFix 2026

The Velosphere team from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Moratuwa won first place in the ComFix 2026 competition with Gamana, their platform dedicated to public transportation. Organised by the university's IEEE Communications Society student chapter, the competition concluded on September 26, 2026, in the ENTC department.
Suhas Dissanayake, Ifaz Ikram, and Kalana Liyanage designed Gamana to improve bus operations in Sri Lanka. Instead of relying on sensors, cameras, or crowdsourced data, the system transforms daily ticket sales into actionable operational information.
Conductors use handheld GPS-enabled terminals to record stops, destinations, and fares when issuing tickets. The platform then tracks journeys in real time to estimate occupancy rates, calculate intervals between buses, and monitor fleet movements. The complete system includes:
- An offline driver app that prints tickets and automatically manages end-of-service closure.
- A passenger app that displays real-time bus locations, arrival times, and occupancy rates.
- A depot dashboard for fleet monitoring, ridership analysis, and the detection of fare or route anomalies.
Each finalist had ten minutes for their presentation, followed by technical questions. The jury consisted of Professor Dileeka Dias (Deputy Vice-Chancellor), Professor Tharaka Samarasinghe, and Dr. Kasun T. Hemachandra, all from Moratuwa University.
Velosphere's functional prototype and deployment plan, perfectly suited to the practices of Sri Lankan private and public bus operators, particularly impressed the judges. This combination earned them first place.
