Best Solution Addressing National Disasters at NBQSA 2024

Mr. Imantha Ahangama, a postgraduate student in Computer Science and Engineering, has received the Best Solution Addressing National Disasters award at the National Best Quality Software Awards (NBQSA) 2024 for his project, “Precipitation Nowcasting with Explainable Artificial Intelligence.” NBQSA, provides recognition to outstanding achievements of individuals and organizations in Sri Lanka who have developed high quality ICT products; provides a window to gain International Recognition; and Identifies young talent.  By promoting high standards and encouraging creative innovation, NBQSA plays a significant role in elevating Sri Lanka’s ICT industry to international standards.

This project focuses on predicting rainfall with high precision over short timeframes (0-6 hours) using advanced AI techniques. By employing multivariate spatio-temporal datasets, including rain radar, satellite imagery, and wind speed data, it provides accurate and timely rainfall predictions with explainability. A significant aspect of the project is the integration of the Integrated Gradients method for explainable AI, which enhances transparency by clarifying the model's decision-making process. This feature is particularly important for sectors such as aviation and maritime, where reliable weather forecasts are essential.

Supervised by Prof. D. Meedeniya, Imantha’s work highlights the quality of research conducted within the department. This achievement demonstrates a strong commitment to addressing real-world challenges through innovative solutions. Congratulations to Imantha on this accomplishment, and best wishes for his future endeavours.
