Team InAirSignature honoured with a Merit Award at NBQSA 2024

At the recent NBQSA 2024 awards, held on October 23, a team of final-year students from the University of Moratuwa’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering achieved remarkable recognition. Team “InAirSignature” — comprising Mr. T. Abinesh, Mr. M. Jathavan, and Mr. G. Vinojith — received a Merit Award for their pioneering work on a cutting-edge in-air signature identification and verification system. The event showcased the highest-quality ICT projects and products in Sri Lanka, and the students’ success highlights their ingenuity.

The National Best Quality ICT Awards (NBQSA) is organized by the Sri Lankan section of the British Computer Society (BCS), The Chartered Institute for IT. This prestigious competition celebrates achievements in ICT, providing a platform for individuals and organizations to gain local and international recognition. By promoting high standards and encouraging creative innovation, NBQSA plays a significant role in elevating Sri Lanka’s ICT industry to international standards.

InAirSignature, the award-winning project, tackles the challenge of creating a robust in-air signature writing, identification, and verification system. Imagine signing your name not on paper but in the air, with a system designed to accurately capture the movements of your hand. This approach, developed by Team InAirSignature under the guidance of Dr. Thanuja Ambegoda, leverages both 2D and 3D solutions for real-time signature capture and verification. The system uses a webcam and a depth sensor to detect each individual’s unique hand movement patterns and discontinuities in the in-air signature, making it both intuitive and highly secure.

InAirSignature’s technology has the potential to revolutionize authentication systems across various fields. From secure online transactions to personalized experiences in public places, the in-air signature approach can provide a seamless, hands-free way of confirming identity.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Moratuwa would like to express a sincere congratulation to the team for their accomplishment, offering best wishes for their future careers. By nurturing innovative projects like InAirSignature, the department continues its commitment to fostering student talent and driving advancements in the ICT field.
