Team WildSight360 honoured with a Merit Award at NBQSA 2024

Team WildSight360, consisting of Mr. Dinuka Thathsara Jinadasa, Mr. Nuwan Jayasanka Mohotti, and Mr. Sumeela Madusankha from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Moratuwa, has been honored with a Merit Award at the National Best Quality Software Awards (NBQSA) 2024. This award recognizes their final-year project, a wildlife monitoring system created to support conservation efforts using deep learning technology in challenging environments.
NBQSA is Sri Lanka’s premier platform for recognizing achievements in ICT, giving local innovators a chance for national recognition and international exposure. The award ceremony, held on October 23, 2024, highlighted the quality of ICT projects by judging entries on factors like originality and creativity. Organized by the Sri Lankan chapter of BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, NBQSA plays an important role in improving the quality of ICT products and discovering young talent in Sri Lanka.
The team’s project, WildSight360, is an innovative wildlife monitoring solution that employs deep learning techniques to classify and track animal species in remote and resource-limited areas. The system utilizes microcontroller-driven cameras and sensor networks to capture and process images of wildlife in real-time. Through optimized deep learning models, WildSight360 is able to deliver high accuracy while operating within the constraints of low-power and low-bandwidth environments, making it ideal for deployment in diverse ecosystems.
Guided by Prof. D. Meedeniya, this project reflects the department's focus on research and commitment to environmental sustainability. WildSight360 shows how technology can be used to address real environmental issues and help wildlife conservation efforts, highlighting the potential of ICT for positive impact. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering wishes Team WildSight360 success in their future work and looks forward to more innovative projects from our students.
