The Department of Computer Science and Engineering joins hands with CERN

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering of University of Moratuwa has become an associate member of the ALICE experiment - one of the 4 main experiments at CERN focusing on the study of the physics of strongly interacting matter at the highest energy densities. To this end, Dr. Luciano Musa, spokesperson for the ALICE collaboration, and Prof. Indika Perera, Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering initiated a collaboration between the two institutions.
The collaboration will allow the students from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering to contribute to the projects at ALICE experiment exposing them to practical applications of high performance computing infrastructure and software.
Dr. Gayashan Amarasinghe and Mr. Kalana Wijethunga visited CERN representing the University of Moratuwa in April, 2022 to meet the ALICE team and discuss the future directions of the collaboration. Two students from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering have already started working with the ALICE Grid team headed by Dr. Latchezar Betev for their Masters Degree program.
